The first of the Oz characters was no surprise, Dorothy. Soon after Dorothy was released, other Barbie dolls were released for the other characters of the movie. These dolls began flying off of the shelves as gifts for many kids, or just regular playing toys. Mattel discontinued the original line of the Wizard of Oz dolls in 1997 when sales declined. These dolls continued to be a favorite among collectors.

Many editions of these dolls have been released in the years to follow.
